Plenary debate on the Security Council reform

H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson President of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly held a plenary debate to kick-off this years’ round of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process on the Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council. In her statement H.E. Katalin Bogyay permanent representative of Hungary explained our countries position concerning the Security Council reform and called for urgent action to make the most important decision making body of the UN more representative of the world it supposed to protect.

Hungary got elected to the Human Rights Council

On 28th October 2016 the UN General Assembly elected 14 new members to the Human Rights Council for the term 2017-2019. Thanks to a successful campaign Hungary received the highest number of votes (144) ahead of Croatia (114) and Russia (112) in the Group of Eastern European States thus will serve in the Geneva based Council for three years starting from 1st January 2017. The Permanent Mission of Hungary would like to once again express its sincere gratitude for the support given to the candidature of Hungary.

Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security

On October 25, 2016, Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN, addressed the Security Council at the Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security. In her statement, Ambassador Bogyay highlighted the importance of women’s increased participation in peace processes.

UN Day Gala Concert co-hosted by Permanent Mission of Hungary to the UN

This year’s UN Day Gala Concert was co-hosted by the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Hungary to the UN on 24 October, 2016. The event started with opening remarks by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the General Assembly Peter Thomson and Under-Secretary-General Cristina Gallach, followed by Dr. László Szabó, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary and Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN. The spectacular event featured performances by the orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera with world-renowned soprano Andrea Rost and tenor Boldizsár László, the dancers of the Hungarian National Ballet and international guest artists from Denmark, Sri Lanka, Australia and the Republic of Korea.

UN Member States met António Guterres Secretary-General-designate for the first time

H.E. Peter Thomson President of the General Assembly organized the first ever informal meeting of the General Assembly with the new Secretary-General-designate Mr. António Guterres on 19th October. H.E. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations asked the Secretary-General-to-be about his concrete plans on strengthening the UN’s response to the increasing phenomenon of human trafficking, forced labour and other forms of modern day slavery.

Joint Statement on the Biological Weapons Convention Review Conference

The following joint statement by the Foreign Ministers of Hungary, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States was delivered by Ambassador György Molnar (Hungary) at a plenary session of the United Nations First Committee at UN Headquarters in New York on October 17, 2016. States Parties to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention will hold their Eighth Review Conference in Geneva November 7-25, 2016, and Ambassador Molnar will serve as its President.

Hungarian National Day Reception in the Headquarters of United Nations

H.E. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN hosted an event in the Headquarters of the United Nations on the occasion of the National Day to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution in Hungary, which started on October 23. H.E. Minister of State Dr. István Mikola welcomed the almost 300 guest on behalf of the Government of Hungary and explained the importance of freedom in the history of our country. Guest of honour Lady Valerie Solti, President of the Solti Foundation, widow of the founder of the World Orchestra for Peace - late Sir Georg Solti - also addressed the audience. The commemorative event featured traditional Hungarian folk music by the Zsikó Zoltán band as well as the masterpieces of Hungarian gastronomy by Chef András Hernádi. Participants could also learn more about the history of the Revolution through a roll-up exhibition displayed at the venue. We are grateful for the generous support of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight 60th Anniversary Memorial Board for sponsoring the event.
