Hungary provides financial assistance to DPA’s conflict prevention and mediation support activities

Meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and also with Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman on 21 February 2017, H.E. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary announced that the Government of Hungary has decided to make a voluntary contribution of $50.000 in support of the work of the UN Department of Political Affairs in the fields of conflict prevention and mediation.

Foreign Minister Szijjártó made a statement at the Open debate of the Security Council on Conflicts in Europe

Mr. Péter Szijjártó was the first to speak as non-Council member in the Chamber about the question of European peace and stability, expressing the hope that the new US administration and Russia will put emphasis on engaging in a dialogue in order to facilitate the resolution of conflicts in the region.

Hungary offers financial support for the establishment of the Syria Accountability Mechanism

On 21 February, at the bilateral meeting held with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, H.E. Péter Szijjártó, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced that Hungary decided to offer a voluntary contribution of 50.000 Euro for the establishment of International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.

First meeting of the Working Group on General Assembly Revitalization

Ambassador Bogyay appointed Co-Moderator of the Working-level Dialogue on Water

The President of the General Assembly appointed H.E. Ms Katalin Bogyay, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Hungary and Mr Lukmon Isomatov, Head of Department of External Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, as Co-Moderators of the working-level dialogue to discuss improving the integration and coordination of the work of the UN on the water-related goals and targets under sustainable development pillars, with particular emphasis on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and a subsequent working level dialogue to take a stock of the discussions at the first dialogue and exchange views on the relevance of possible next steps.

Friends of Water working lunch discussion at the Hungarian mission to the United Nations

On behalf of the Permanent Representatives of the Steering Committee of the Friends of Water group, Ambassador Katalin Bogyay hosted a successful working lunch at the Hungarian mission to the United Nations on 10 February. Nearly a hundred participants, including a significant number of Permanent Representatives gathered to discuss the latest developments in the international water arena and gave a fresh impetus to the implementation of water-related Sustainable Development Goals and targets of Agenda 2030. The co-moderator role of Tajikistan and Hungary conducting two informal working level dialogues on the topic in the General Assembly marks the start of a new chapter.

Kick off debate on the Security Council reform

The first informal debate of this years’ round of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council took place today in the United Nations Trusteeship Council. As a long-time, supporter of the SC reform process H.E. Katalin Bogyay permanent representative of Hungary reiterated that there is a need for a strong and representative Council. Hungary remains convinced that a realistic reform, a win-win solution can be reached through open dialogue.

Participation at the United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony

H.E. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations and Members of the Hungarian Parliament participated at the United Nations Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, held on 27 January, on the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. UN leaders addressing the General Assembly underlined the importance of Holocaust education in fighting anti-Semitism, and promoting tolerance and mutual respect for all cultures and religions of the world.

The President of the General Assembly convened a high level dialogue on Building Sustainable Peace for All on 24th January in order to discuss synergies between the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development and sustaining peace. Hungary was represented at the event by Under-secretary of State for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Ádám Zoltán Kovács, who talked about the importance of sustainable water resources management based on the outcome of the Budapest Water Summit.

16 dead and many injured in a bus crash in Italy - our thoughts are with the families and loved ones

Sixteen people died in the coach accident which occurred in the vicinity of Verona, in Italy, just before midnight, one person in a critical condition is being kept in an artificially induced coma, two persons are severely injured, ten persons have serious injuries, while thirteen have light injuries. Twelve people survived the accident without injuries, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told the press.

Hungary stresses that peace requires action, not only words at Security Council debate on conflict prevention

Historic panel discussion honoring Povl Bang-Jensen, the Danish hero of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

H.E. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay hosted a historic panel discussion to honor the memory of Povl Bang-Jensen, the Danish hero who saved many Hungarian lives following the Revolution. Before the event, the Danish and Hungarian ambassadors and the panelists visited the rooftop of the UN Secretariat building where Bang-Jensen burned the list of secret witnesses in 1958.

Water Connects – Budapest Water Summit 2016

From 28 to 30 November 2016 the Government of Hungary, in cooperation with the World Water Council, successfully organized the Budapest Water Summit 2016 to give momentum to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water.
During the three-day conference Heads of State and Government, Ministers, high-level representatives of international organizations, business, the scientific community and civil society have gathered in Budapest, Hungary to promote the practical implementation of water-related objectives in the SDGs and the Paris Agreement. The event provided an opportunity to highlight that water connects, it does not divide.
